National Apprenticeship Week 2025 – Meet Our Apprentices
Meet Georgie.
Level 2 Finance / Accounts Assistant – West Cumberland Engineering, Workington

“The opportunity to earn while you learn is invaluable, and the skills you gain on the job will stay with you throughout your career”
This week is National Apprenticeship Week, a week-long celebration that brings together businesses and apprentices across the country to shine a light on the positive impact that apprenticeships make to individuals, businesses and the wider economy. To mark the occasion, we spoke with Georgie Huddart to talk about her experiences and share what she has learned during her apprenticeship.
When did you join the Shepley Group?
I previously started working for another engineering company in May 2022, before West Cumberland Engineering acquired them in January 2024.
What made you choose an apprenticeship?
I have always been drawn to hands-on work, and finance seemed like the perfect field for me due to its blend of problem-solving and practical application. Previously, I was with TIS, where I completed a Level 3 Business Administration Apprenticeship. During that time, I gained a strong understanding of business operations, which led me to realise my interest in finance. When West Cumberland Engineering took over TIS, I saw it as a fantastic opportunity to continue my career and make the transition into finance. The change allowed me to build on my existing skills and start focusing on my long-term career goals within the finance industry.
What does a typical day in your job involve?
As a Finance/Accounts Assistant, my daily tasks include processing invoices, tracking wage hours, and assisting with payroll. I make sure all records are accurate and up-to-date, ensuring the finance team can work efficiently.
How have you progressed since joining the Shepley Group?
Since joining West Cumberland Engineering, I’ve made great progress in developing my skills and boosting my confidence. When I started my apprenticeship, my finance experience was limited, but over time, I have learned a lot from my colleagues and have taken on more challenging tasks as I’ve gained experience. West Cumberland Engineering has supported my growth with ongoing training and opportunities to take on greater responsibility.
What are your career aspirations?
In the future, I plan to continue advancing in the finance field, taking on greater responsibilities and expanding my knowledge. My ultimate goal is to move into a senior role. To support this, I am committed to enhancing my skills by completing Level 3 and 4 apprenticeships in accounting, which will help me unlock more career opportunities.
What do you enjoy most about your apprenticeship? Has anything surprised you?
What I enjoy most about my apprenticeship is the hands-on experience I get to apply every day. I find it rewarding to see my work contribute directly to the team’s goals.
What you say to somebody considering an apprenticeship?
To anyone considering an apprenticeship, I would highly recommend it! The opportunity to earn while you learn is invaluable, and the skills you gain on the job will stay with you throughout your career. An apprenticeship isn’t just about learning, it’s about growing, getting real experience, and working towards a long-term career. The path may seem challenging at times, but the rewards are definitely worth it. Just keep an open mind, ask questions, and don’t be afraid to take on new challenges.
