National Apprenticeship Week 2025 – Meet Our Apprentices
Meet Ruby.
Level 3 Pipe Welder, Fabrication Workshop, Workington

“I didn’t really like school, so I wasn’t considering going to sixth form. I looked in to apprenticeships as I wanted to do something that was hands-on and challenging”
This week is National Apprenticeship Week, a week-long celebration that brings together businesses and apprentices across the country to shine a light on the positive impact that apprenticeships make to individuals, businesses and the wider economy. To mark the occasion, we spoke with Ruby Watson to talk about her experiences and share what she has learned during her apprenticeship.
What made you choose an apprenticeship?
I didn’t really like school, and I wasn’t considering going to sixth form. I looked in to apprenticeships that were hands-on. I chose welding as I wanted to do something that was hands-on and challenging, and I could get paid!
What does a typical day in your job involve?
My day includes lots of different tasks, but is always started with a morning brief from the supervisor or shop floor manager, where everyone is assigned their jobs for the day.
How have you progressed since joining?
Since starting my apprenticeship I believe I have made a lot of progress in my knowledge for welding, as well as the skills and behaviours needed for the shop floor environment.
What are your career aspirations?
My current focus is on completing my Level 3 Pipewelding course and becoming fully qualified. I want to gain as much learning and experience as possible.
What do you like most about your apprenticeship? Has anything surprised you?
The thing I enjoy most about my apprenticeship is that I am very hands-on all the time, which suits me. I tend to get bored quite easily, so it always keeps me occupied and engaged. It is very independent, and I get paid to learn!
What you say to somebody considering an apprenticeship?
In my opinion an apprenticeship is the best way to learn the trade – because you’re not only learning it, you’re doing it.
