Meet Ben.

Level 3 Electrician

“I give effort each day knowing there is something rewarding this company has to offer at the end of it. When I first started I was excited to start the career I wanted to enter for so long, and being surrounded by a great work environment and colleagues made it really worthwhile”

This week is National Apprenticeship Week, a week-long celebration that brings together businesses and apprentices across the country to shine a light on the positive impact that apprenticeships make to individuals, businesses and the wider economy. To mark the occasion, we spoke with Ben Clements to talk about his experiences and share what he has learned during his apprenticeship.

When did you join Shepley Group?

I joined PPS Electrical in September 2024.

Wheat made you choose an apprenticeship?

Whilst going to an engineering based school, I developed a desire to pursue a career within the electrical engineering industry, this career path was also influenced by my father. After two years at Energy Coast UTC, I knew an apprenticeship was the next step in life I wanted to take as I find hands on work enjoyable and interesting

What does a typical day in your job involve?

The typical day for me involves tasks such as PAT testing and inspecting tools, equipment and other various electrical gear. Being called out to install, repair and maintain equipment and machines. And finally fabricating and fitting metal tray, trunking, uni-strut and other frame work. These jobs vary and not every day is the same

How have you progressed since joining?

When I first started in September 2024, I was full time in college learning the basic and necessary skillsof an electrician. In the first 6 weeks of my course we did a rotation, learning key skills from other trades. Since then I have made good progress with my knowledge and skills within my job role. I am able to complete tasks independently and confidently and stepping up to each challenge step by step every day

What are your career aspirations?

I am currently working towards completing my apprenticeship in the next two and a half years to become a qualified electrician. I would then like to go on to become nominated and furthermore complete a degree in electrical engineering to allow me to advance and pursue different job roles inside the electrical industry

What do you enjoy most about your apprenticeship, has anything surprised you?

I enjoy learning new skills and facing challenging jobs each day with the knowledge I continue to gain. I give 100% effort each day knowing there is something rewarding this company has to offer at the end of it. When I first started I was excited to start the career I wanted to enter for so long, and being surrounded by a great work environment and colleagues made it really worthwhile.

What would you say to people considering an apprenticeship?

My honest answer would be to take the chance when you have it, an apprenticeship offers so many things as you step in t the world of work early and progress through life gaining confidence in yourself in all aspects. Each day you grow your ability and work towards a qualification.
