Meet Ruben.

“Something that surprised me was just how included I got to be from early on”

This National Apprenticeship Week we’re highlighting some of the apprentices working for us at the Shepley Group, helping us to build a legacy of excellence. Meet Ruben Hutton, an Electrical Apprentice for PPS Electrical. Learn more about what drove him to an apprenticeship, and what aspirations he has for his future career.

When did you join PPS Electrical?

I joined in September 2021

What made you choose an apprenticeship?

I chose an apprenticeship to gain a qualification whilst also getting experience in a working environment

What does a typical day in your job involve?

A typical day will begin with a brief from my supervisor outlining what the job entails and then working off drawings or wiring diagrams to construct a panel

How have you progressed since joining PPS Electrical?

I have progressed massively in my general practical ability to the point where I can confidently be left to work independantly

What are your career aspirations?

My short term aspirations are to complete my apprenticeship and qualify as a certified electrician

What do you enjoy most about your apprenticeship, has anything surprised you?

I enjoy being able to progress my skillset and seeing that progression in the work I carry out. Something that surprised me was just how included in the jobs I got to be from early on

What would you say to people considering an apprenticeship?

Go for it. It helps you gain confidence by learning on the job and knowledge by working with peers and mentors at college who work in different environments to you
