Following an accelerated rollout of Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil throughout January, we have transitioned over 88% of our Sellafield site fleet onto the use of HVO.
HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) is a biofuel made from renewable raw materials and sustainable waste from verified vegetable fats & oils. It has a similar chemical composition to fossil diesel fuel, meaning it can be used as a renewable fuel in existing diesel engine vehicles. Part of the paraffinic family of fuels, it is a fossil-free alternative to mineral diesel which can be used as a drop-in alternative without any modifications.

This transition to a sustainable fuel has already resulted in a saving of 14 tonnes of carbon for the month of January, which is an excellent achievement in our quest for the Group to reach Net Zero by 2040.
Decarbonising our fleet is one of our top priorities. Our Net Zero commitment also includes adding more electric vans to our existing fleet to run alongside those using HVO Fuel, with EV charge points installed across 5 locations with a view to installing more in the near future.
The remaining 12% of vans that are incorporated into commercial operations will feature in the next stage of the phased implementation of our HVO rollout.
