High Level Waste Storage Plant

A range of tasks including:

Evaporator B project, involving a series of plant improvements to an existing evaporator to help improve performance and evaporative capacity.

Steam Improvements, involving the upgrade of the condensate and high pressure steam systems within HALES. Over 1km of stainless steel pipework, ranging from 8nb to 200nb was installed.

Intermediate Heat Exchanger project, involving the integration of an IHX within existing pipework configurations of the cooling tanks.

Shepley Engineers successfully implemented considerable plant improvements. The project developed from a requirement to upgrade the existing carbon steel condensate and high pressure steam systems which had become severely corroded over the years. The system forms a major ring circuit which feeds steam and collects condensate to all areas of the building.

Ranging from 8nb through to 200nb and approximately 1km of stainless steel and Sch80 carbon steel pipework in total, the installation was systematically programmed to cause minimal disruption to plant operations. With a major section of the pipework installed at high level, these confined areas of plant posed access problems and difficulties in integrating with existing building services. This resulted in many of the piping routes being site run by Shepley Engineers, with as built drawings produced for the client’s design team.
