On this day in 1956, the world's first commercial nuclear power station to be connected to the national grid, Calder Hall, was opened by the late Queen Elizabeth II. Nuclear power was ‘harnessed for the first time for the common good of our community’.
This date fills us with immense pride, being part of the team working on the site during construction – pioneering a cleaner and more sustainable future, and being engaged on the Sellafield site ever since.
69 years on from the historic opening, we are engaged on many other nuclear sites around the country, supporting Britain’s clean energy future and decommissioning goals.
